The number of applications for the Dongen initiative “Knocking at the Door”, which helps children from families with limited money celebrate St Nicholas, was said to have risen from 47 to 270. The growth was described as encouraging but distressing at the same time.

A fundraising event was held on Tuesday evening. Although it lasted only half an hour, its stalls were already filled with items including a puppet theatre, a shuffle bowl and many books.
