Anton Geesink won Olympic judo gold in Tokyo

Anton Geesink defeated Japan’s Akio Kaminaga in the open-class judo final at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. With a kesa-gatame scarf hold, the 30-year-old Dutchman held Kaminaga down for ten seconds and became the first judoka from outside Japan to win Olympic gold. The victory ended Japan’s hopes of a fourth judo title at the Games and was followed by Geesink preventing his entourage from entering the tatami in a gesture of respect.
Material from before and after the tournament has been presented as rarely exhibited archive material. A memorial moment for Geesink’s Olympic title was also held at Papendal in 2024.
