Aniek van den Aarssen wins world title in C3 kilometre

Aniek van den Aarssen became world champion in the C3 kilometre time trial at the World Championships in Apeldoorn. The 29-year-old Dutch rider won in 1:15.991, narrowly ahead of Canadian Pemble, who took silver in 1:16.161. Dutch debutante Anne Martha Blok finished third in 1:16.162, just one thousandth of a second behind Pemble.

Blok had set the fastest qualifying time and led for much of the final, but lost ground in the last lap. The 28-year-old from Bleskensgraaf, who was born without a right arm and left forearm, had taken up cycling less than a year earlier after a talent day. Van den Aarssen had finished third in this event last year and previously won world titles on the road and in the 500-metre time trial.
