Amsterdam removes bicycles left unused for six weeks

Amsterdam’s municipality removes about 350 bicycles a day, including bicycles that have remained in the same place for more than six weeks. In De Pijp, enforcers mark bicycles and attach a notice; if the marking is still present later, the bicycle is removed. One owner of a cargo bike with three flat tires disputed the assessment, and was given another week to repair and use it before removal.

In Noord, Nieuw-West, Weesp and Zuidoost, bicycles may remain in place indefinitely as long as they are not wrecks. Elsewhere, enforcers check bicycles at least twice a year and respond to residents’ reports, estimated at about 50 a day across the city. Removed bicycles are taken to the bicycle depot, where owners pay €26 to collect them or €46 for home delivery. Usable bicycles are stored for six weeks, while wrecks are discarded immediately.
