Amsterdam metro disruption caused by false train detection

Amsterdam metro services were disrupted for hours on the morning of 2 October after the safety system detected a train at an unexpected location, although no train was there. As required by safety rules, the system stopped all metro movements. Lines 50, 51, 53 and 54 were affected, and the North/South line was later also halted.

Initial findings indicated that work had not followed a prescribed instruction, causing the false detection. The system had to be reset with its supplier and every train had to be relocalised before services could resume. The investigation remains under way. Pro and Denk council members asked responsible alderman Elise Moeskops to discuss the incident with the transport operator and asked whether it resembled disruptions linked to the new safety system in 2021 and 2022.
