Amsterdam investigation into a ban on disposable packaging

Amsterdam is examining a ban on disposable packaging, including takeaway cups and food containers. The municipality said a legal review found that a local ban is possible, provided it substantiates why earlier measures were insufficient and assesses the effects. It cited research finding that single-use packaging accounts for 30% of street waste.

The form and timing of any ban have not been decided. Options under consideration include reusable cups and trays that can be returned to participating businesses, and a deposit scheme. The municipality plans to consult businesses and experts and to learn from other cities before deciding how to proceed.
