Amsterdam appoints alderman for outdoor play

Amsterdam appointed Lian Heinhuis as alderman responsible for outdoor play, aiming to help children play freely and safely outside more often. The municipality reported that, despite having nearly 2,000 playgrounds, children are spending less time outdoors, with screens, increasing urban bustle and differences in playground quality cited as obstacles.

The municipality plans to seek child-friendly street designs and to consider children from the outset when developing new neighbourhoods. Heinhuis said better playgrounds and municipal plans alone are insufficient, and that parents also have a role in encouraging children to play outside.
