Almere approves 327-room budget hotel despite council concerns

The municipality of Almere approved a new 327-room budget hotel on the Trekweg in Almere Buiten. The hotel will replace the Rey Events event centre, which will be demolished, and will be located next to an existing hotel for migrant workers near the Festijn Culinair restaurant. Each room will have a small kitchen or kitchenette, and the building will include a private parking garage.

Council members questioned whether the kitchens could allow the building to function as large-scale housing, citing the development of the adjacent migrant-worker accommodation. The municipality said the plan complies with the applicable environmental plan and building rules and that a kitchenette does not automatically make a room a home or short-stay accommodation. It cannot refuse the permit based only on concerns about future misuse, but may investigate and enforce the rules if the building is not operated as a hotel. Complaints or notifications may lead to monitoring.
