AI assistance in speeches in the House of Representatives
◆1 source
An investigation found that 68 of the 150 members of the Dutch House of Representatives used artificial-intelligence tools such as ChatGPT or Claude when preparing the opening statements of their parliamentary contributions in the previous year. The analysis examined texts in which AI was detected with at least 50 percent certainty; the investigators said that meant the actual number could be higher. Interruptions and motions were excluded.
Former MP Lahlah van Pro ranked first, followed by Van Meelen (PVV), Belhirch (D66) and Van Eijk (VVD). The use was reported across the House, with PVV and Group Markuszower members overrepresented; the SP, Party for the Animals and Volt were not found to use AI. The tools were used less often in major debates by party leaders and more often in committee debates, including some maiden speeches. MPs who acknowledged using AI said they used it mainly to improve wording or shorten texts while retaining responsibility for the content. The CDA was working on guidelines for AI use, according to party leader Bontenbal.
