Afshin Ellian argued that a new Cold War was approaching and that Europe would have to choose between Gaza and Rotterdam. He said the war in Ukraine was continuing and that Vladimir Putin had for years expressed a desire for a Greater Russia, sought confrontation with the European Union and NATO, and regarded the EU as a threat to the Russian state.

Ellian also said Russia reacted harshly whenever a former Soviet republic moved closer to the EU.
