Abdi Nageeye previewed the New York Marathon

Abdi Nageeye said Andreas Almgren was his favorite to win the New York Marathon, despite the Swedish athlete making his debut over 42.195 kilometers. Nageeye described Almgren as an unusually data-driven runner who trains mainly at sea level, completed training weeks of more than 215 kilometers and won the world half-marathon title in Copenhagen in September with a time of 58:06. Kenyan and Ethiopian runners, including Benson Kipruto and Deresa Geletha, were also among the expected contenders.

Nageeye was preparing for his sixth New York Marathon, where he won in 2024. He had dealt with a persistent right hamstring injury and difficult training conditions in Kenya and Flagstaff, and said he expected to be running at about 85 percent of his potential. He was aiming for a place in the top five and to finish the race. He had originally wanted to run the Amsterdam Marathon, but his management and the organizers did not reach agreement on the starting fee.

Amsterdam Marathon runners describe their pre-race breakfasts

1 source

Elite runners preparing for the Amsterdam Marathon were reported to favor familiar, modest meals rather than experimenting shortly before the race. Dutch contender Mikky Keetels ate a chicken sandwich and a chocolate sandwich for breakfast in the preceding days, having previously tried carbohydrate loading with M&Ms without success. On race morning, she ate two white sandwiches with honey or jam and drank a lot of coffee. Kenyan runners Nicholas Kipkorir and Geoffrey Toroitich Kipchumba were reported to eat familiar meals of beans, bread and eggs on the preceding Friday and Saturday. Kipchumba’s race-morning meal was a cup of coffee and two slices of bread with honey, while Kipkorir had tea, a sports drink and three bananas. The athletes said they avoided unfamiliar foods to reduce the risk of stomach problems.
