District Attorney Willem Nijkerk discussed discrimination cases and the limits of criminal law amid demonstrations and public statements since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack and the subsequent war in Gaza. Examples included a “Hup Hamas” sign, a football shirt referring to October 7, and a comparison of Jews with Nazis by Frans Timmermans.

Nijkerk addressed whether such expressions constitute antisemitism or remain within the boundaries of the law. He said that expressions referring to Zionists can in practice be directed at Jews, and also discussed the legal limits of continuing along Sophie Street, where he said he would not stand a chance if he continued doing so.
