White Cane Day brings visual impairment into focus in Lelystad

Bartiméus organised an awareness event for White Cane Day on Dukaatplein in Lelystad, where passers-by could walk with a white cane and wear simulation glasses. The glasses represented different visual impairments, including severely restricted vision and tunnel vision, while participants used touch and hearing to navigate.

Bartiméus staff said the activity was intended to show the challenges faced by blind and visually impaired people, including crossing streets and encountering blocked routes. The organisation also urged people to stop when they see someone using a white cane. Tactile paving with ridges or dots helps people who cannot see, but participants said the experience was confronting and required them to rely heavily on their other senses.
