Unstable rock formation threatens Kandersteg

An unstable rock formation known as Spitze Stei threatens the Swiss mountain village of Kandersteg with a possible fall of millions of cubic metres of rock and ice. The thawing of permafrost, which helps hold the mountain together, allows water to enter between the rocks and can cause parts of the formation to slide. The village has about 1,300 inhabitants and many tourists. Residents are aware of the danger but are not described as particularly nervous, saying they receive information about Spitze Stei and know what to do if something happens. The speed and scale of any possible rockfall remain uncertain.
