Trial over motorcycle collision on Kuinderweg

Prosecutors sought four months in prison, 120 hours of community service and a two-year driving ban for a 35-year-old motorcyclist from Emmeloord over a collision on the Kuinderweg on 7 September of the previous year. They alleged that he drove a BMW motorcycle at 158 to 170 km/h on a road limited to 80 km/h and struck a Yamaha rider from behind, seriously injuring him. The injured rider suffered broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a shattered collarbone and a spleen injury, and said he still experiences daily effects despite recovering about 90%.
The defendant said he had not seen the Yamaha and could not remember the impact. He drove away and reported to police about two hours later, saying he had not understood what had happened. Prosecutors described his conduct as reckless and faulted him for leaving without helping; the defence disputed that he knew he had been involved and said his exact speed had not been proven. The court is due to rule on 28 October.
