Torch parade sparks tensions around Unicum football club in Lelystad

A torch parade by hardcore supporters of Unicum football club was held in Lelystad on 3 October, after the club announced that it would stop using sound equipment, loud music, fireworks, torches and drums from 1 October. The measures had been imposed by the environmental service OFGV because of noise complaints. Supporters walked from snack bar De Botter through the Botte, Gondola and Schouw neighbourhoods to the club, with their faces covered and lit torches, according to images they posted online. Residents reportedly experienced the parade as intimidating, while complaints also concerned alleged fireworks, loud music and drums at matches.\n\nUnicum vice-president Chris Piket said the club had received signals that residents who had complained, as well as others, were being approached. He urged supporters to act peacefully and not to threaten, intimidate, use violence or cause damage. Residents also raised recurring parking problems at home matches, saying supporters park on pavements and in planted areas when the club car park is full. Opinions in the neighbourhood differed on the volume of music, but some residents said it could be heard inside their homes with the windows and doors closed.
