The new De Marke school, part of the Etty Hillesum Lyceum in Deventer, was reported to be dealing with what it called “toilet terror” six weeks after opening. Sanitary towels and smeared excrement were reported on the walls, along with damage to toilet fixtures such as paper holders. Readers responded with surprise and indignation and suggested that students help guard and clean the toilets, or collect door handles from the caretaker when they need to use the facilities.
