John van den Heuvel said that prison guard Marcel was also a guardian of the rule of law. He referred to the 2018 murder of the brother of key witness Nabil B., the 2019 attack on lawyer Derk Wiersum and the 2021 killing of crime reporter Peter R. de Vries as attacks on the rule of law. The violence associated with drug crime caused shock and fear in the Netherlands, he said. Commemorations were held, and a monument for De Vries and his next of kin was unveiled on Leidseplein. Dozens of people remain protected by special police and defence units.
