Alcohol consumption is being discouraged on health grounds, with the Health Council warning that beer, wine and spirits are unhealthy and can contribute to road accidents, aggression and violence. Efforts to curb alcohol abuse also took place in Limburg in the 19th and 20th centuries, according to researcher Frank Hovens, who found evidence of alcohol control during that period.
