The memorial service associated with American Thanksgiving was due to leave Leiden’s Pieterskerk on 26 November and move to Wassenaar, after more than half a century in the church. The Pieterskerk is the former prayer house of the Pilgrim Fathers, who are described as founders of the modern United States.

The move caused bewilderment in Leiden, where the church and the celebration were regarded as closely connected.
