Eighteen-year-old trampoline gymnast Thalissa Wijkstra from Alkmaar is set to compete at the world championships in Nanjing, China, from 5 to 8 September. Her coach, Sven Mooij, said she competes at international level alongside fully professional athletes, despite not receiving the same financial support.
The cost of participating is reported to be about €6,000, most of which Wijkstra and her family must cover themselves because the union cannot finance everything. Wijkstra said it felt strange and that raising the money was difficult. Her mother, Thea Wijkstra, said they had to pay almost all the costs themselves.
