Shipping traffic on the Van Starkenborghkanaal and Eemskanaal, part of the main Lemmer-Delfzijl route, reportedly doubled as water levels on the Rhine reached a historically low level. The usual daily traffic was reported to be 30 to 40 ships, compared with 80 ships a day in the previous week.
