Sale of Kandinsky painting Das bunte Leben
◆3 sources
Wassily Kandinsky’s 1907 painting Das bunte Leben sold at a Christie’s auction in London for £27 million, or nearly €32 million. The sellers were the heirs of Emanuel and Hedwig Lewenstein, a Jewish couple from Amsterdam who bought the work in 1927.
The painting was auctioned in 1940 after the German occupation of the Netherlands began. Research cited in the reports found indications that it had been confiscated by the Nazis. German authorities classified it as Nazi-looted art and it was returned to the Lewenstein heirs in 2023 after years of efforts to recover it.
