Residents of Camping De Westeinder challenge compensation in court

Residents of Camping De Westeinder in Rijsenhout appeared in court in Haarlem to challenge compensation offered after the campsite was sold to developer Kleen Estate at the end of 2023. Kleen plans to redevelop the site with luxury chalets and an indoor pool, but residents—more than 60 of whom are reported to live there because they cannot find other housing—have been told to leave. Most were offered less than €5,000, while owners of chalets that cannot be moved could receive tens of thousands of euros. The residents said the amounts did not cover relocation costs or provide realistic replacement housing.

A previous ruling barred Kleen from evicting residents without appropriate compensation, although the developer appealed. Kleen is now asking the court to force the residents to leave. The court is due to rule on 11 November, while the appeal in the earlier case is scheduled for a hearing at the end of November. The precise redevelopment plans and required permits remain uncertain.
