The Wadden Sea World Heritage Centre (WEC) in Lauwersoog said it will apply for bankruptcy without a short-term financial injection. The municipality of Het Hogeland and the province of Groningen are not prepared to provide a rescue, according to the centre's management.

A rescue plan is still being worked on. One report said the WEC and its seal shelter would file for bankruptcy if that plan does not succeed within two weeks.
