Portrait exhibition highlights refugees’ personal stories
◆1 source
Photographer Evelien IJpelaar from Loon op Zand made portraits of residents she met at an open day at the emergency shelter in Kaatsheuvel. She spoke with them about their everyday lives and asked some of them to be photographed. The resulting series includes Iryna and Esther from Ukraine and Rashad from Yemen, whose family remains there. IJpelaar said she wanted to show that refugees are people like everyone else and encourage conversations about their experiences.
The exhibition is on display at De Poorten community centre in Tilburg until 30 October. It is expected to be shown at two other locations in Tilburg in the coming months, while possible exhibitions elsewhere in Brabant are also being considered. No decision has been made about its longer-term future, and IJpelaar said she would not take more photographs of this group.
