Huis Willet-Holthuysen opened the exhibition Plantage aan de gracht on the role of former residents of Herengracht 605 in financing and profiting from Surinamese plantations in the eighteenth century. Banker Willem Deutz lent money to plantation owners and controlled sales of plantation products including coffee and sugar; merchant Fredrik Berewout, who later lived in the house with his family, owned several plantations, including Jagtlust.
Curator Thijs Boers found records containing 125 previously unknown names of enslaved people. The exhibition’s audio tour, voiced by presenter Dolores Leeuwin, includes the names being read by Leeuwin and her father. The report said the people’s full original names are unknown, as they were given only first names on the plantation.
