Peter Berdowski recalled his mother’s stories about the annual flooding of the polder where she grew up, the Hague Beemden. His grandparents’ farm stood on a sandy ridge called the Galgenakker and was spared the flooding, while his mother skated to school across the flooded meadows in winter.
