Daniil Medvedev was disqualified during his China Open semi-final against Novak Djokovic in Beijing after a ball he hit into the stands struck a spectator in the face. The spectator left the stands with assistance. At the time, Djokovic led 7-5, 5-3, according to one report, and advanced to the final. Medvedev said he wanted to apologise personally, while Djokovic said he was shocked by the incident. The disqualification cost Medvedev €195,000 in prize money and 200 ranking points. Djokovic subsequently won the China Open for a seventh time when Alex de Minaur retired early in the second set, with Djokovic leading 7-6 (3), 0-1.

Alexander Zverev advanced to the quarterfinals of the China Open in Beijing by defeating China’s Shang Juncheng 6–0, 6–3 in the second round. He was due to face Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, in the quarterfinals. He was later reported to have reached the third round of the Shanghai Masters after defeating China’s Wu Yibing 6–4, 7–6 (4).
