New York subway memorabilia sold at annual flea market
◆1 source
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) held its annual two-day sale of discarded and outdated New York subway equipment at a site beneath a railway line in Brooklyn. Items on sale included station signs, garbage cans, handholds and seats. A three-seat bench was priced at $1,000, while a two-seat version cost $650; signs ranged from about $500 to more than $1,000 depending on their size, material, inscription, location and historical importance. About 4,000 people reportedly attended the sale, with the first customer arriving at the entrance the previous evening. The MTA began organizing the sale five years ago, and it has attracted subway enthusiasts and nostalgic travelers despite the prices.
