Mart de Jong was due to start the half marathon in Eindhoven on 11 October alongside Erik Ratelband, after training for several months. Ratelband owns and supervises the Our Hagje day-care facility in Haghorst, which De Jong has attended for three years. De Jong planned to eat steak after finishing.

Trade unions FNV and CNV announced that bus drivers, other drivers and office staff in regional transport would strike one day a week until Christmas. The national strike action is due to start on Wednesday and will also affect regional transport in Brabant. The unions are seeking agreements on lower workloads, a scheme for older employees and higher pay. Employers say they have made a fair proposal. The collective agreement covers about 13,000 employees at companies including Arriva, Hermes, EBS and Qbuzz.
