The cabinet plans to make manufacturers and importers responsible within four years for collecting and reusing products such as sofas, kitchen cabinets and beds, according to the report. It expects to have a first draft of the plan this autumn. The measure is intended to reduce the amount of discarded furniture sent to incinerators and improve recycling and reuse. About 2 billion kilograms of new furniture is sold in the Netherlands each year, while around 260 million kilograms of discarded furniture reportedly gets a second life through online marketplaces or recycling shops. A growing number of municipalities have already begun recycling furniture themselves.
