Existing neighbourhoods in the Maastricht-Heuvelland area are being transformed into 30 residential care areas to help older people live independently for longer. The initiative responds to an ageing population; by 2030, one in four residents of South Limburg is expected to be at least 65 years old. The project involves an investment of €33.4 million, made available by health insurers CZ and VGZ through the Integrated Healthcare Agreement. According to Petra Lamberts, chair of Deltaplan Maastricht Heuvelland, care and welfare organisations are working with housing corporations to adapt mainly social-rental apartment buildings for older people, including those using walkers or wheelchairs.
