Lithuania and Poland prepare evacuation plans for a potential war

Lithuania and Poland are preparing plans for large-scale evacuations if a war with Russia breaks out, including for a possible movement of up to one million residents of the Baltic states through the Suwałki Corridor, the narrow land link between Poland and Lithuania. The area is regarded as a vulnerable point on NATO territory.
The preparations coincided with a large mobilisation exercise in Lithuania. In Lazdijai, near the Polish border, hundreds of participants took part in a simulated refugee camp for displaced Lithuanians, where they were registered and offered medical and psychological assistance and food. The exercise exposed delays in registration. Lithuanian government chancellor Tomas Daukantas said there was no indication that a war would begin in the coming months, but that the country wanted to be prepared and was confident it could cope.
