King Filip and Queen Mathilde traveled from Melsbroek Air Base near Brussels to Kazakhstan on Sunday and were welcomed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in Astana. Their three-day state visit officially began on Monday with a ceremony at the presidential palace in the capital. During the visit, the couple spoke with children at a rehabilitation center in Astana. On Tuesday, Filip called for deeper economic cooperation between Belgium and Kazakhstan in a speech to the Kazakh-Belgian Business Council, saying the two countries were well placed to serve as a bridge between Europe and Central Asia.
