Jan Zwarthoed stopped selling fish at the Valkenswaard weekly market on October 1 after more than 50 years. He had been a regular presence at the market, where he said herring made up 80 percent of his business. He described his final year as a fish seller as a high point for the quality of the herring. The market has now lost its longtime fishmonger.
