EU multiannual budget negotiations

Irish Minister for European Affairs Thomas Byrne said the initial responses to Ireland’s negotiating proposal for the EU’s multiannual budget were as expected and that the proposal provides a basis for negotiations. He spoke before a meeting of EU ministers for European affairs.

Byrne said an agreement on the budget is needed by the end of the year.

European Commissioner for Budget Piotr Serafin and Irish Minister for European Affairs Thomas Byrne called for an agreement on the EU’s new multiannual budget before the end of 2026. Serafin said EU member states should stop calculating how much they contribute to the budget and what they receive in return.
