Identification of Lancaster wreckage in Dronten

Investigators identified aircraft wreckage recovered from the Van Veldhuizenbos in Dronten as an Avro Lancaster Mk III JB120 LQ-D of the Canadian 405 Pathfinder Squadron. The bomber was shot down by a German night fighter on the night of 27 to 28 September 1943 while en route to Hanover and crashed into what was then the IJsselmeer. Its seven crew members — four Canadians, an Australian, a Scot and a Briton — have been missing since then.
The wreck was recovered in November 2025 after remains were found in the forest in 2022. Identification numbers on two aluminium pieces confirmed that it was the same aircraft from which a gun turret had previously been found nearby. Human remains found during the recovery are still being examined by the Defence Storage and Identification Service to determine whether they belong to crew members. Part of the wreckage is on loan to museums and foundations.
