Brazilian police killed a man after he held 13 children hostage for more than two hours at a school complex in Curitiba, in southern Brazil. The complex included a kindergarten and an elementary school, and the children were reportedly between four and five years old. Police said the man had threatened to douse himself and the children with gasoline and set them on fire. A police spokesman said negotiators had been present but officers saw no other option. Police said the man had schizophrenia. After about two hours, two bangs were heard and officers emerged with some of the children. The Curitiba city council said it would provide psychological assistance to the children and the hostage personnel.
