Granite Daf 600 unveiled at Matchbox on Strijp-S

A three-tonne granite sculpture of a Philips Daf 600 postal pickup was unveiled outside the Matchbox building on Philitelaan in Strijp-S, Eindhoven. The work commemorates the roles of Philips and Daf in the area; a single report said Philips introduced the vehicles for internal mail delivery in 1961. Alderman Stijn Steenbakkers and urban planner Adriaan Geuze arrived for the unveiling in an original Philips Daf 600 mail vehicle.

The sculpture also serves as an impact barrier to protect the wooden Matchbox building from vehicles that could miss the corner. It was carved over two months and is set slightly crooked as it sinks into the asphalt. It has no mirrors for safety reasons, and a bent side strip is still being repaired.
