Free neighborhood taxi connects older residents in Hilversum

A free neighborhood taxi service in Hilversum has transported more than 60 regular users during its first six months. About 40 volunteers drive less mobile residents from postal code area 1217 in the Northwest district to destinations within the municipality, including hospitals, hairdressers, family visits and bridge afternoons. The service picks passengers up at home and is funded with support from local companies and organizations.
The BuurtRijder initiative was started by Liliane van der Hoeven and Saskia Teppema after they noticed that older and less mobile neighbors could not always take part in activities. The volunteers aim to keep the service free, while stressing that it is not a replacement for regular urban and regional public transport and that it operates only within the city limits.
