Flevoland develops contingency plans for road closures

Flevoland said it was developing contingency plans to protect the province’s accessibility if roads or bridges fail. The plans include diversion routes, information for road users through signs and digital traffic systems, and regional coordination when an unplanned closure affects several areas. The move followed the sudden closure of the Hardenbergerbrug near Nijkerk on the A28, which affected access to Flevoland via the N301 and the Nijkerkerbrug. Rijkswaterstaat closed the bridge because of an acute safety problem without consulting the province, according to the provincial executive.

The province said it was also discussing the condition of the Nijkerkerbrug near Zeewolde with Rijkswaterstaat. Talks in late 2025 and early 2026 had included maintenance and a possible new bridge between 2031 and 2033, but that plan is now on hold because the national government has less funding for roads and other infrastructure. The province said future accessibility in Southeast Flevoland, the Eemvallei, the Gelderse Vallei and the Northern Veluwe required a broader approach, amid housing and defence-related plans, and that exploratory discussions with the relevant authorities were continuing.
