Firefighters issue advice on preventing carbon monoxide poisoning

Firefighters advised residents to install carbon monoxide detectors in the boiler room and other rooms, placing them near a gas burner on the ceiling or at breathing height farther away. In bedrooms, the detector should be positioned at head height while sleeping, and in studies at head height when seated.
They also advised having gas combustion systems inspected at least every two years by a certified installer. In rental homes, the landlord is responsible for checking the appliance, while apartment residents were advised to discuss the matter with their owners’ association. Firefighters warned against using barbecues, patio heaters or homemade heaters indoors, saying alternative combustion methods can cause fires and suffocation.
