Fire in a monumental wingnut tree in Eindhoven

A fire burned inside the trunk of a monumental wingnut tree on Maria van Oosterwijckstraat in Eindhoven on Thursday. Firefighters, residents and municipal staff worked for hours to save the tree. After an initial report at about 4:30 p.m., the fire was extinguished, but the tree began smoking again later that evening.

Three fire engines were deployed. Residents used garden hoses and ladders while firefighters and a tree specialist decided to drill holes in the trunk and fill them with water, with a larger opening cut to release heat. The cause was presumed to be fireworks or an open flame. The tree specialist said the holes were necessary to extinguish the fire and that the tree could withstand them.
