Fire destroys Marché des Enfants-Rouges in Paris

A fire overnight destroyed the Marché des Enfants-Rouges, described as Paris’s oldest covered market, in the city’s 3rd arrondissement. Ariel Weil, mayor of central Paris, said the fire was under control by Monday morning but the market could not be saved.

The cause remains unclear. One report said about 150 firefighters were deployed, around 1,000 square metres were destroyed and the metal roof largely collapsed. No deaths or injuries were reported, and nearby buildings were not damaged. According to the market director, about 20 businesses were affected.
