Fewer cycling fines in Lelystad shopping area

The number of fines for cycling through Stadshart Lelystad fell from 59 in November last year to four in August. The municipality introduced the cycling ban in August 2025 and began issuing €130 fines the following October; after dozens of fines in the first months, the number generally declined, reaching two in June and eight in July before the August figure.

Visitors said they noticed little improvement in practice. Some cyclists appeared unaware of the ban, while others continued to cycle through the shopping area, including on fatbikes. Visitors said enforcement was limited and called for more checks, although one visitor said the ban made the area more pleasant for shopkeepers and another accepted the rules after getting used to them.
