Ome Piet ferry likely ends service without successors

The Ome Piet ferry between Badhoevedorp and the Amsterdamse Bos was due to make what was probably its final crossing on Sunday after 16 years of service. Volunteers Martin Brekelmans, 79, and Erik Hoogenboom, 61, had operated the ferry on weekends from April through October, carrying passengers about 100 metres across the Ringvaart from the Nieuwemeerdijk. They said they were stopping, but no new volunteer had been found to continue the service.
The ferry was revived by Brekelmans and Hoogenboom in 2009 and named after Piet Eilander, who had operated a crossing at roughly the same location in the 1950s. Hoogenboom hoped the service could find successors, as happened with the ferry between Rijsenhout and Aalsmeer, but the municipality had not indicated that it would take over. Alderman Marja Ruigrok said at a recent council meeting that the municipality wanted to organise a meeting to look for possible successors.
