European Commission plans strategic dialogue on oil refineries

The European Commission reportedly announced a strategic dialogue on the future of European oil refineries. The stated aim is to reduce costs and ensure sufficient supplies of fuel, including for defence, as governments seek to prevent production capacity from declining faster than demand for oil products. Refineries in Rotterdam and Vlissingen were cited in connection with the discussion. Europe is partly dependent on imports of diesel and kerosene, while companies and consumers are facing record prices amid the war in the Middle East. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte had previously warned of possible shortages of diesel for tanks and kerosene for combat aircraft in a war situation.
