Elisa Serné competed at the Gravel World Championships

Elisa Serné, 25, of Breda competed in the elite Gravel World Championships in Australia, her first appearance at that level. She had previously won the 19-34 amateur world title in Limburg and finished ninth at the elite European Championships in late August.

Serné, who does not have a professional contract, had hoped to test herself against the leading riders, including Marianne Vos, on what was described as a demanding course. A later report said she exceeded her own expectations at the championships and did not follow unspecified advice from Vos.

Marianne Vos wins Gravel World Championships

9 sources

Marianne Vos won the Gravel World Championships in Nannup, Australia, claiming her second world title in the discipline and her 15th cycling world title overall. The 39-year-old Dutch rider finished solo after 126 kilometres, largely on unpaved roads. Vos had been riding with Germany's Rosa Klöser late in the race, but Klöser crashed a few kilometres from the finish. Vos said the course was muddier than expected and described the title as special after a difficult year.
