Debate over teacher influencers as school phone ban approaches

The cabinet has advised that mobile phones should be kept at home or in a safe at school from 2027, prompting questions about whether the measure will also apply to teachers. The issue has drawn attention to teachers who make videos with students for TikTok and Instagram, including dances, sketches and spontaneous classroom interactions. Some researchers want these so-called teacher influencers to stop making such content. One of them is Martijn Holsappel, who teaches seventh- and eighth-grade students and posts several videos each week. He said his TikTok account, made with his class, has 131,000 followers, with students appearing in almost all the videos. Holsappel began making the videos during the coronavirus pandemic, when he used them to stay in contact with students who were at home and show what was happening at the empty school.
